quantum of ugly

Arrived at circular quay station this morning to find an enormous cruise ship taking up most of the harbour.

I went for a quick stroll to the bridge and back at lunch time and was pretty awed by it’s size and hideousness.

I was also awed and confused by the enormous panda laying about on top of it.

spot the tiny people

This hideous giant boat has a maximum capacity of 4,900. This sounds like exactly the opposite of any kind of holiday I would want to take.

the more unexpected the better

If your workplace feels a little gloomy and depressing, I highly recommend decorating the desks of your colleagues to bring joy and good cheer.

The recipient was surprised and delighted.

This one was for impending nuptials, but really any occasion will do. Except Christmas, I think that’s a little too expected.

Crafting bespoke heart garlands or general desk decoration would be an excellent side hustle.

i guess i could just use the date as the title

Joe/Frank boots acquisition achieved! Joan will be delighted as she has been regularly nagging us to action this for 6 months.

We set out relatively early in an attempt to avoid the crowds. We were after two pairs of shoes and pretty quickly found what we wanted in both stores we visited – this was a pleasant surprise as J/F has wide feet, wears orthotics and has difficulty finding shoes that are comfortable.

The customer service at both shoe stores was spectacularly good. I’m very inclined to write to both companies and let them know this. Making an effort to leave good feedback would be a nice project I think.

Because Joe/Frank not huge on shopping we carped the whatevs and grabbed a couple of other necessities for him while we were out. We’re nothing if not efficient.

We were home by about 1pm and I was completely and utterly knackered afterward, so I lay about reading My year of rest and relaxation for the rest of the afternoon.

I enjoyed both the book and the lazing rather a lot.

Nothing much else from the weekend list was actioned. I have no regrets about this.

ten for the weekend

Clearly I have some sort of crafting block at the moment – all good intentions and no follow through!

I need to stop buying craft supplies and get to making. Clearly having stuff on a list is not doing much, so I’m trying something slightly different this weekend. Being specific about what thing I want to start and giving myself a hard stop after 20 minutes.

+ update the horrible quality photos I’ve recently uploaded here directly from my phone
+ 2x cardio
+ take Joe/Frank to buy sturdy boots for his holiday to visit Joan!
+ embroidery (20 minutes)
+ petticoat (20 minutes)
+ open sashiko kit (20 minutes)
+ organise sewing box in lounge-room (20 minutes)
+ make list of books read in September/October (20 minutes)
+ update 60before60 list (20 minutes)
+ begin to gather holiday reading material – HOLIDAY!

And last week’s intentions? A pretty decent – 5/10

✓ movie and dinner date with Don (Plien Soliel and izakaya fujiyama)
✗ open that sashiko kit
✓ knit six rows of impossible jumper
✓ nap
✓ 2x cardio
✗ assess craft supplies
✗ prioritise future crafting activities – and get started on one thing
✗ limit internet use
✓ edit that photo of the Japanese laundromat
✗ cross off the completed items on the 60before60 list

where is the love?

Earlier in the year I started decorating the desks of my ProjectSulfur team colleagues for significant occasions – birthdays, surprising football victories and one wedding.

Another of the guys in my team is getting married next week and I’ve been on the hunt for bunting or garland with hearts on. Strangely this was absolutely nowhere to be found – I found spots, stripes, pineapples, flamingos, Halloween, Christmas, babies, soccer, athletics and even octoberfest – but no hearts.

Because I was committed to my theme, I was forced to make the bunting-garland myself. I downloaded this heart shape, grabbed some coloured cardboard and spent the evening tracing, cutting and punching.

It was a lot fun and I realised how much I love and miss doing silly crafting.

** One day behind – must catch up!

now if there was a daiso version …

We’ve decided to go in for advent calendars again this year. As is the way of these things, last year was mixed – with Joan unable to make a decision and abstaining, mine underwhelming and Don, Joe/Frank and Bessie loving theirs.

Of course nothing will ever come remotely close to the genius Joan and Bessie handmade calendar, so I’m struggling to find something remotely appealing for myself this year.

Challenges:
+ I don’t drink alcohol
+ I don’t wear make-up (save for mascara)
+ I don’t eat chocolate
+ I don’t drink black tea
+ I’m very particular about scent

Totally simple then.

Perhaps this Tiffany one? A bargain at £104,000.

I suspect what I will do is buy myself 24 small useful trinkets and lucky-dip them.
