this is not the juror you are looking for

in the neighbourhood

Tomorrow sees me heading off for jury selection.

I am not at all enthusiastic about the prospect (indeed, I just stress-ate several pieces of shortbread and a large block of chocolate), but it may make decent blogging fodder if nothing else.

I’ve heard that there is a good deal of waiting around on the day, but they don’t do a very good job of telling you what you can bring to keep you occupied, so I’m taking along some work. Hopefully this will make me appear to be exactly the kind of person whose selection is challenged.

  1. I was called up for jury duty this time last year. I felt very apprehensive about it at the time, but it was one of the most interesting experiences I have had. I was selected for a dangerous driving causing death trial, which only went for 5 days. There is a lot of time spent waiting before you are selected. In the event you are empaneled, there is still a lot of time that you feel could be used more productively – you’ll be kept waiting during adjournments and all sorts of things. It does make you wonder how the justice system works at all. On the other hand, the Court will be very appreciative of your time, and will let you know that. And you’ll probably meet some interesting people during the process. Good luck either way!

    • Daniel!

Your comment was perfectly timed, just what I needed to read and made me feel much more calm about the whole thing this morning!

(We’ll draw a veil over that brief spate of tears)

Thankfully I missed out this time, but I know at least two people who have been twice, so I may get my chance (though please not a 6 month trial until I retire!)

  2. Glad to be of help! I enjoyed reading about your experience. It brought back all the mentions and memories! Well managed on negotiating your way out of the six month trial too! You should add that to your catalogue of manageress skills!
