cathartic (more ranting)

So the whole Bratson saga kicked up a notch today.

Please enjoy some excerpts from my file notes:
===============
Delays with current task due to time spent texting and on internet

Noted that Bratson was spending a good deal of time texting and on the internet.

Bratson responded that he “needed his headspace” and stated that he had not missed any deadlines (ha! see below).

Reminded him that:

  • We need to complete assigned work as quickly and accurately as possible so we can move on to the many, many other tasks we have.
  • It is not appropriate to sit about texting / browsing the internet when work needs to be completed.

===============
Current Task (2 part task)
Due: 27/9
Part 1. Search for 143 names in database – generous estimated time: 6
hours (at 1-2 max) per name. Time allowed 2 days.
Task:

  • Copy Name from spreadsheet
  • Paste into search screen
  • Click Search Button
  • Copy result to spreadsheet
  • If no result, search for variation of name and repeat
  1. Sat with Bratson for approximately 15-20 minutes explaining task
  2. Had Bratson take notes while watching me complete task actions
  3. Sat with Bratson for approximately 10-15 minutes while he started task to answer questions

Part 2. [other, lengthy part of task]

Part 1 of task has taken 3.5 days+. Bratson has been reminded on several occasions that this is a two part task and the deadline given was for both pieces of work.

Bratson has been asked multiple times each day (particularly when observed texting and on internet) how he was going, if there were any issues he needed resolved or if he had any questions.

When pressed Bratson advised Part 1 would be completed COB 26/9.

Update: 28/9 – Bratson delivered part 1 of task at 1.15pm 27/8.

I now need to complete part 2 of the task myself (Bratson out of office today), adversely impacting my other deliverables and have had to apologise profusely for delay in delivery.

Just WTF?

Headspace indeed!

Given that my previous approaches to MrT regarding Bratson have been unsuccessful, I approached his PA about how I might best raise this.

Today, when expressing disgruntlement to MrT that my work had now slipped (see above) I received a right bollocking.

Apparently I have “personal issues” and “negative energy” with Bratson.

As a manager, it is my job to ensure Bratson is not texting/using the internet
As a manager, it is my job to ensure Bratson performs to my standards
As a manager, if Bratson does not understand a simple task, it is my fault for not explaining it adequately

I attempted to explain the very, gentle, encouraging approach I had taken with Bratson (ie. treating him like a 5 year old) and I received a bollocking.

I also received a bollocking for approaching his PA.

When I asked MrT if he was certain he was being completely objective here, I received another bollocking.

The astounding thing is that SaltMinesLimited is not the type of place where quasi-nepotism1 abounds, if I was in a law firm or professional services (please Universe, never again!), I would totally expect this and act accordingly. My peers in middle management (who have all mostly done the very hard-yards) are particularly livid at this nonsense.

I’m thinking the optimal strategy is to give Bratson no work and let him wander, eat biscuits and text to his heart’s content while earning his ridiculous salary.

remainders

You may recall the blanket that I crafted for Mom when we knew the end was nigh. And which she was thrilled to receive, and which we had tears about.

I came upon the very same hart-to-hart-exploding-television-blankie today in craiglist pix of the estate sale.

Sad, yes? I think so too. Your life reduced to pink price tickets.

Even sadder, Mom and her husband had a book where they listed pretty much everything they possessed and named who should get what. I am feeling rather guilty that we all decided we didn’t want anything (though Don and I do already have the china and the crystal and the silver and the sword) and everything should be included in the estate sale.

Really does make you think about what you own and the value/worth to others. Clutter begone!

And that we really must get around to making a non-crazy, very explicit will.

One day, in the very distant future, I’ll write a lengthy post about the settling of the estate. Holy!goodness! it has been (and continues to be) a bit of a wild ride.

forgotten

I am not entirely sure what prompted the revisiting of very elderly bookmarks, but here I was. A good number of the links were dead, but thought I’d share some of the some of the remainder (sans recipe links – they live here)

what is the universe trying to tell you?

On arriving at the bus stop yesterday afternoon after foraging through my giant, hideously expensive namesake bag, I discovered that I was in possession of J/F’s student travel10 and I had inadvertently given him mine.

Darn.

Cue the rush to buy new ticket (one cannot pay the ferryman bus driver for a ticket between 7am and 7pm weekdays).

Then the interminable trip home.

Jumped off one stop early visit my favourite purveyor of wine.

Wine acquired and I headed off home.

Halfway realised I was strangely unencumbered – spoot! Compendium full of work missing.

spoot!

Back to winez shop – no go.

Cannot quite believe I left something on a bus.

Walked rather quickly to the end of the route (we’re the first stop) – bus had left. Was probably the one which passed while I was in shop, saying “NOT IN SERVICE” which was headed back to the depot.

spoot!

Attempted to call bus depot, planning to race around there and collect from lost property (is roughly 15-20 min walk away). Office hours 8am-4pm weekdays, otherwise uncontactable.

spoot!

Whinged on twitter and was panglossed by marvellous imaginary internet friends.

And enveloped by my adorable offspring, a rather good game of footy (sadly must now support the weagles), quite good wine and excellent choons until very, very late.

Team Plan and documenting reporting requirements be damned!

<much later>oh weagles, damn you!

in which i am frightfully amusing

This week Joan’s pal Vincenzo commenced employment at SaltMinesLimited. He’s working for my pal Heather.

And much hilarity ensued.

Mummy,

Vincenzo said he’s happy for you to send me his staff photo.

I would like to print it out and stick it up in my cubicle.

Looking forward to receiving it.

Thanks,
Joan

I know your trickster ways, young lady. If Vincenzo is happy for you to have it, he can send it.

To find it, he needs to go to the intranet and search for his name.

[screenshot redacted]

Using that search he can see everyone’s photos – including mine – which looks nothing like me.

He can also look at prior Christmas and EOFY party photos on the intranet – they are always good value.

I don’t know that I care for your slander, what are these “trickster ways” you refer to?

Perhaps I can get Vincenzo to forward me some snapshots of your trashbag sessions at the Christmas and EOFY parties to stick up in my cubicle instead.

Well, you wanted trashbag photos.

<edited to add> obviously someone’s mail server is lying about the time. I vote Joan’s.

must be that walking

Today, after spending a good hour troubleshooting with IT, I discovered that Bratson deleted 1.2million records from our database yesterday through sheer stupidity. Turns out he re-started a process which was archiving/deleting records – for no reason that he could explain (and which he had utterly failed to mention when quizzed). I very calmly had to eviscerate him. I don’t hold out much hope that this will be the last time he does something idiotic. Thank the universe for back-ups!

Nonetheless, I had a quite marvellous day: I covered off a piece of work which had been looming, had an excellent kick-off meeting for a long-term project and I feel very positive about where I am headed at SML1.

1SaltMinesLimited

lesson learned

The mood-improving effects of moving about have once again been proved.

Since my old lady style fall I’ve been relatively immobile – no yoga, no walking to the SaltMinesLimited and boy!howdy! Have I been full of the stressed and surly!

Despite a few aches, I’ve forced myself to take the long hobble this morning. Pretty certain I’ll see a marked improvement in cheeriness.
