though i’d like to learn to drink black coffee

After watching the horizon programme, a little over 3 weeks ago Don and I embarked on the 5:2 diet.

I’m usually rather skeptical about this sort of faddish diety thing, but in the 2 years since the programme was first shown, there has been enough stuff written to indicate that it has had really positive benefits for some people.

Mostly we were motivated by the apparent health benefits (very keen to measure the impact on Don’s insane cholesterol levels), but losing some weight wouldn’t necessarily hurt.

Basically you’re just cutting your consumption down to 500 (600 for men), 2 days a week. The rest of the time you can eat | drink as normal. Initially I found it quite challenging and it all made me a bit surly, which is kind of silly because I’ll often not eat until I get home and think nothing of it. But have settled into the groove. You can actually eat quite a lot and I think we’ve eaten more vegetables in the past weeks that we have all year.

Within 3 weeks I had lost 5cm from my waist and Don 3cm. And that is with no exercise, as I’ve been quite terrible about going to the gym. I don’t know if I actually feel any better because I’ve been afflicted with that wretched cold, but Don is mad for it.

xxxxxxxxxx

Speaking of wretched colds, I now have an absolutely enormous, shining cold sore, which is roughly half the size of my face – just the thing for my weekend away!

As ever, it could be worse, RHH, who had a cold at the same time, broke out in face hives!! Counting my blessings.

  1. I am fanatically against fad diets but I also did this last year and lost a significant amount of weight over the course of three months. I felt so much better for it. I did want to lose some weight but also wanted to feel more healthy which I now do. Good luck with it.

  2. Oh! This is very good to know!

I’m finding it easier to handle if I don’t eat anything at all until I get home – then a handful of berries or grapes and dinner. Already I don’t want to look at miso (except in a restaurant setting) ever again.

Still don’t feel any healthier, but imagine I will do so when I can drag myself back to exercise.
