no, i’m not a vegetarian1

This weekend saw the beginning of my one month hiatus from drinking alcohol.

I’m attempting to see if my chub really is caused by plowing through a couple of bottles of wine of Fri, Sat, Sun evenings – because god knows I do enough exercise and eating right.

Well, that and every time I drink alcohol, I wake at 3am and cannot go back to sleep for an hour or so – leaving me very sluggish and rather grumpish in the morning.

The reactions of the people I’ve told are quite surprising – primarily, the reaction is one of horror. How could I do such a thing? How could I deprive myself? When I explain that there have been a couple of stretches of five years when I didn’t drink at all (and not ages 0-5, or 5-10) they are completely aghast. I don’t know what this says about the people I talk to. Anxious Mum refused to believe that I would last an evening (if anything was going to make me determined …).

So far it has been pretty easy actually. Haven’t even felt like a glass and it’s not as though I have no access to it – we are quite well stocked, and Don isn’t abstaining, but I haven’t been tempted at all.

Still chubby, still waking up at 3am …

1Amazing how many people used to ask, “are you a vegetarian?” when I told them I didn’t drink.

  1. Good for you! I was off the drink for about four years while I was trying to re-impregnate myself and then when I was pregnant/breastfeeding. Didn’t miss it, and certainly didn’t miss the volatility of the drink/post-drink cycle. I also gave up coffee, and the chub dropped off (I was drinking full-fat milk lattes, 3-4 a day, so not surprising!).I’m sure the chub and the insomnia will pass.

  2. Thanks imaginary internet friends! It was suprisingly easy to last the weekend and will be interesting to see if I can keep it up going forward.Certainly I will save a lot of dosh if I can do it longer term ($200+ a fortnight spent on wine is probably a smidge excessive).

  3. Good luck! I remember when you didn’t drink at all! I am still breastfeeding so I don’t drink, but I do feel like it sometimes .. especially with the antics of the 13 year old .. in fact if it wasn’t for my two younger children I’m sure I’d be an alcoholic!

  4. HB: Perhaps I am. Just finished watching a celeb tv chef eat a “Filipino vegetable dish” which comprised pork and a couple of snake beans. So if Anthony Bourdain thinks pork is a vegetable, who am I to say otherwise. Vegetarian it is!Harriet: Ha! I remember that too, it seems so very long ago (well, I guess it was so very long ago!)In fact, I think I wasn’t drinking when Dfkan was at the height of her teenagerness – I’m not sure how the hell I managed that. I daresay because I was still in thrall to the evil cigarettes.Still, there is some hope – my very often stubborn, wilful, frustrating eldest child has turned into an utterly delightful, very responsible and totally sensible young woman (who’d have thought?). You only have about 7 years to go!

  5. Good luck. I know I couldn’t do it. That said, when I travelled last year I lost 10kg due to exercise, eating sensibly and drinking a lot less. Who could have thought it was that easy? I suspect it’s a glandular or genetic problem actually đŸ™‚ Anyhoo… good luck. You’re a better man than I am gunga din!

  6. So what you’re saying is that I really need a long trip to Europe? I think I could handle that (although I did come back 5kg heavier from Italy!).The real challenge will be Thursday evening – when I’m supposed to be attending a cocktail party.
