50before50: #49 buy new music on average of once per month (12-14/24)

Wow, a long time between updates on this project! And sadly, a long time between music purchases.

Lately, I’m finding it a bit of a challenge to discover new music. Most of the things I buy come from hearing something on the radio (fbi and 2ser for preference) that I’m keen to explore further. Now that I’m cycling to work, that avenue is not available.

MUST MAKE TIME – BECAUSE I LOVE LOVE LOVE MUSIC, but it is definitely not such a huge thing in my life as it once was. I’d really like to change that – hence this project!

Anyway – on with the hitz …

#12 – Middle Kids.
Middle Kids: Your Love
Middle Kids: Edge of Town

A little bit Fleetwood Mac, a little bit Florence and the Machine – if you can imagine such a thing.

The album wasn’t available when I bought the singles, but now it is, so of course I bought that too.

#13 – Fred Thomas: Changer
A rare discovery that did not originate from radio. I had verging on 60-70 unread email updates from the various record companies I’ve made purchases from. One day I was slowly working my way through the inbox and came across this. Fred Thomas was not on my radar at all, which is odd because this is exactly the type of music I like.

This has rapidly turned into one of my very favourite albums in recent years. It has echos of The Hold Steady, Matthew Sweet, lots of other things. It’s wonderful – you should go listen.

Then there was a BIG GAP between purchases, until I heard a song on the radio last Sunday when I was running out to buy the capsicum I’d inadvertently omitted from the shopping list.

#14 – Stella Donnelly: Thrush Metal

It will come as no surprise to anyone that I’m totally shit at describing music, but this is low-fi, totally oz, sweet, earnest, fighty, feministy – really lovely.

As ever, all purchases via the utterly brilliant bandcamp
